As ministers of the gospel, we are all too aware that our ministry is not without its challenges. The devil, who seeks to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10), is always on the prowl, looking for ways to attack our ministry and hinder the work of God. In this article, we will explore ways the devil attacks your ministry and how to combat them with the power of God and His Word.
- Division and Disunity
One of the devil’s favorite tactics is to cause division and disunity among the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 1:10). This can manifest in various forms, such as gossip, backbiting, jealousy, and pride. To combat this, we must actively promote unity and encourage open communication, love, and forgiveness within our ministry.
The devil loves to sow discord among believers, causing division and strife within marriages, families, and churches.
Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3).
Pursue peace and reconciliation in your relationships:
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone (Romans 12:18).
- Lack of Focus and Purpose
The enemy will try to distract us from our God-given mission and purpose (Ephesians 2:10). We must remain steadfast in our calling, continually seeking the Lord’s guidance and direction for our ministry.
- Spiritual Apathy
Spiritual apathy can lead to complacency and stagnation in our walk with God and our ministry (Revelation 3:15-16). To guard against this, we must cultivate a fervent and consistent prayer life, regularly study God’s Word, and surround ourselves with like-minded believers who will encourage and challenge us in our faith.
- Burnout
Overworking and under-resting can lead to burnout, which the devil can use to render us ineffective in our ministry (Galatians 6:9). We must prioritize self-care and ensure that we are maintaining a healthy balance between our ministry responsibilities and personal well-being.
- Financial Difficulties
The devil often attacks our finances, causing stress and hindering the growth of our ministry (Matthew 6:33). We must trust in God’s provision and be faithful stewards of the resources He has given us, seeking wise counsel and praying for financial breakthrough.
The devil can attack your ministry by causing financial troubles. Philippians 4:19 states, And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Trust in God’s provision and seek His guidance in managing your finances.
- Moral Compromise
Temptations and moral compromises can severely damage our credibility and witness for Christ (1 Corinthians 10:12). We must put on the whole armor of God and resist the devil’s schemes, fleeing from any form of immorality and striving for holiness in all that we do.
- Persecution
Persecution and opposition from the world will inevitably come (John 15:18-20). Instead of becoming discouraged or fearful, we must remember that this is a sign of our allegiance to Christ and press on in the power of the Holy Spirit.
- Unhealthy Relationships
Unhealthy relationships, whether personal or professional, can hinder our ministry and cause unnecessary heartache (2 Corinthians 6:14-18). We must be discerning in our choice of friends and partners, ensuring that they share our values and commitment to Christ.
- Loss of Vision
Without a clear vision, our ministry can become aimless and ineffective (Proverbs 29:18). We must continually seek the Lord’s guidance and direction, asking Him to reveal His vision for our ministry and empowering us to fulfill it.
- Doubt and Unbelief
The devil’s primary strategy is to plant seeds of doubt and unbelief in your mind. He wants you to question your calling, your ability to serve God, and your worth as a child of God.
The devil can attack your ministry by tempting you to doubt God’s plan. Hebrews 11:1 states, Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Have faith that God has a plan for your ministry and trust in His provision.
When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time (Luke 4:13).
Overcome doubt and unbelief by meditating on God’s promises and proclaiming His truth:
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand (Isaiah 41:10).
Doubt and unbelief can cripple our faith and prevent us from experiencing God’s best for our ministry (Hebrews 11:6). We must stand firm on the promises of God, meditating on His faithfulness and trusting in His sovereignty.
- Pride and Self-reliance
Pride and self-reliance can lead to a lack of dependence on God, making you vulnerable to the devil’s attacks.
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall (Proverbs 16:18).
Humble yourself before God and acknowledge your need for Him:
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God (Micah 6:8).
- Distraction and Busyness
The devil uses distraction and busyness to divert your attention from your relationship with God and your calling.
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil (Ephesians 5:15-16).
Stay focused on your priorities and set boundaries to protect your time with God:
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well (Matthew 6:33).
The devil can also attack your ministry by tempting you to become too busy. Mark 6:31 states, And he said to them, ‘Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. Make sure to take time to rest and recharge, so you can continue to serve God effectively.
- Discouragement and Depression
The devil can use discouragement and depression to weigh you down and make you ineffective in your ministry.
An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up (Proverbs 12:25).
Find comfort in God’s presence and seek help from trusted friends or professionals if needed:
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18).
- Lust and Temptation
The devil uses lust and temptation to entice you into sin, damaging your testimony and relationships.
Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body (1 Corinthians 6:18).
Resist the devil’s schemes by guarding your heart and mind:
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it (Proverbs 4:23).
The devil will tempt you in many ways, including in your marriage. 1 Corinthians 10:13 states, No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. Remember to flee from temptation and seek God’s help
- Laziness and Procrastination:
The devil can use laziness and procrastination to hinder your progress in ministry and other areas of your life.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters (Colossians 3:23).
Stay diligent and committed to your assignment.
As ministers, we must remain vigilant and prayerful, knowing that the devil is always seeking to attack our ministry.
- Fear:
The devil can also attack your ministry by instilling fear in you. 2 Timothy 1:7 states, For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. Remember that God is always with you and that He has given you the power to overcome fear.
- Gossip:
The devil loves to use gossip to destroy relationships and ministries. Proverbs 16:28 states, A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends. Stay away from gossip and speak only truth and love.
- Health Issues:
The devil can also attack your ministry by causing health issues. 3 John 1:2 states, Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. Seek God’s healing and trust in His plan for your life and ministry.
As a minister, you are on the front lines of spiritual warfare. The devil will attack your ministry in many ways, but with Scripture and the power of the Holy Spirit, you can resist his attacks. Stay vigilant, seek God’s guidance, and trust in His provision and healing. Remember that God is always with you, and He will never leave you or forsake you.
