In the realm of ministry, many pastors and ministers often equate loud shouts, amplified voices, and the repeated “Amen” from the congregation as proof of divine endorsement or anointed preaching. However, Scripture warns us that volume and vocal response are not synonymous with the anointing or the mind of God. True ministry is rooted in divine wisdom, humility, and a sincere pursuit of God’s heart.
Many ministers believe that the louder they preach, the more anointed they are. Likewise, congregants may shout “Amen” louder and louder, thinking it signifies divine approval. But Jesus warns us against this superficial display:
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.”
Matthew 23:27
This teaches us that outward appearances, such as loud voices or enthusiastic responses, do not necessarily reflect inner truth or divine approval. True anointing resides in the heart and the alignment with God’s word.
The Bible emphasizes that God looks at the heart, not outward displays:
“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7
A minister who preaches passionately but lacks genuine humility, love, and obedience to God’s word may be shouting to no avail. Likewise, a congregation that responds loudly but ignores the substance of the message is missing the point.
Shouting “Amen” Is Not Equivalent to God’s Approval:
Responding with “Amen” is biblical, it’s a declaration of agreement with God’s truth. But repeated or loud “Amens” do not automatically mean the message is from God or that the minister is delivering His mind:
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”
Psalm 19:14
This verse reminds us that the acceptability of our words and responses depends on their alignment with God’s will, not their volume.
The Importance of Spirit-Led Preaching:
Preaching must be Spirit-led, guided by the Holy Spirit, who reveals God’s mind and heart:
“However, when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”
John 16:13
A true minister listens to the Holy Spirit, ensuring that what is preached is God’s genuine message, not just emotionally charged words designed to evoke loud responses.
The Role of Wisdom and Discernment:
Paul urges believers and ministers to seek wisdom and discernment:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
James 1:5
A wise minister recognizes that effective preaching is about conveying God’s truth with humility, clarity, and love, not about volume or applause.
The Fruit of Genuine Ministry:
Genuine ministry produces fruit, lives transformed, humility demonstrated, love shown, and Truth proclaimed:
“By their fruit you will recognize them.”
Matthew 7:20
Loud shouts and “Amens” are superficial unless they are accompanied by genuine spiritual fruit.
Brothers and sisters, let us remember that being anointed by God is not about how loud we preach or how vociferous our responses are. It is about being faithful to His word, led by His Spirit, and walking in humility and love. As ministers, our goal is to seek God’s mind and communicate it faithfully. As believers, our response should be rooted in understanding and reverence, not just emotional outbursts.
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
Matthew 7:21
Let us strive to preach and respond in sincerity, humility, and obedience, always seeking to do the will of God, rather than merely shouting louder or saying “Amen” louder.
