In the spiritual journey of every believer, there is a divine call to be “on fire for God.” This fire is not a fleeting emotion or a superficial enthusiasm but a profound, passionate, and sustained devotion to our Creator and Lord. The Bible presents a compelling picture of a life ignited by divine fire, a life that burns with fervor, radiates His glory, and demonstrates His power. God desires His children to be carriers of His presence, walking in the fullness of His Spirit, and living the “normal Christian life” as fiery, passionate followers of Christ.
The imagery of fire is pervasive throughout Scripture. It symbolizes God’s holiness, His presence, purification, and power. In the Old Testament, God appeared to Moses in a burning bush that was not consumed (Exodus 3:2). The mountain of Sinai was covered with fire when God descended upon it (Exodus 19:18). The tabernacle and temple were filled with the fire of God’s glory (Leviticus 9:24, 2 Chronicles 7:1). These manifestations of fire signified God’s divine presence and His holiness.
In the New Testament, fire continues to symbolize the Holy Spirit’s empowerment. On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended as “tongues of fire” that rested upon the disciples (Acts 2:3). This fire ignited the early church, empowering believers to boldly proclaim the Gospel, perform miracles, and live lives that reflected God’s glory.
The consistent biblical theme is that fire is an essential part of the life of a true believer, a life that is passionate, purified, and powerful. God wants His people to be fiery in their love for Him, unwavering in their devotion, and alive with His Spirit.
God’s Desire for His People to Be Burning and Burning for Him
God’s desire is clear: He wants His children to be burning with passion for Him. In Revelation 3:15-16, Jesus speaks to the church in Laodicea, saying, “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold or hot. So then because you are lukewarm… I will vomit you out of My mouth.” This vividly illustrates that lukewarmness is unacceptable to God; He longs for His people to be fervent, zealous, and fully committed.
Throughout Scripture, we see God’s expectation for His followers to be on fire spiritually. Romans 12:11 urges believers to “serve the Lord, not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.” The Greek word used here for “fervent” (spoudazo) signifies boiling over with enthusiasm and zeal.
The phrase “burning for God” encapsulates a life that is consumed by passion for Him, where love, devotion, and zeal are the driving forces. This kind of fire is contagious; it influences others and advances God’s kingdom. It is not a superficial or temporary flame but an ongoing, burning, fiery commitment rooted in a deep relationship with Christ.
The Call to Be Carriers of His Glory and Power
One of the most profound truths of the Christian life is that believers are called to be carriers of God’s glory and power. Jesus Himself said in John 14:12, “He who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do.” This indicates that the Christian life is one of divine empowerment, living in the power of the Holy Spirit to bring transformation, healing, and signs and wonders.
The early church was characterized by this fiery power. Acts 1:8 states, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” The apostles and early believers carried the fire of God, performing miracles, healing the sick, casting out demons, and witnessing boldly.
Today, the call remains the same: believers are to be filled with the Holy Spirit, burning with His presence, and walking in divine power. This is the “normal Christian life” a life where God’s glory radiates through His people, and His power is demonstrated in everyday life.
The Normal Christian Life: A Life of Fire
Many Christians accept a life of mediocrity or spiritual complacency, believing that the Christian experience is about mere salvation and moral living. However, Scripture reveals that the true, normal Christian life is one of fiery devotion, Holy Spirit empowerment, and passionate service.
The Apostle Paul describes this life in Romans 12:11: “not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.” The Greek word for “fervent” again emphasizes a life that is boiling over with zeal. Similarly, 2 Timothy 1:6-7 encourages believers to “stir up the gift of God… for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
Living the “fire Christian life” means being consumed with love for Christ, passionate about His purposes, and living with an awareness of His presence. It involves continual pursuit of spiritual growth, prayer, worship, and obedience. It is a life marked by holy enthusiasm, a relentless desire to see God’s kingdom come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
How to Live on Fire for God.
Living a life ignited by God’s fire requires intentionality and discipline. Here are some practical ways to cultivate and sustain this fiery passion:
Deepen Your Relationship with God
Fervor begins with intimacy. Spend quality time in prayer, worship, and reading the Word. As you encounter God’s presence regularly, your love and passion for Him will grow. Psalm 42:1-2 expresses this longing: “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God.”
Seek the Holy Spirit Daily
The Holy Spirit is the source of divine fire. Ask daily for His filling and empowerment. Acts 1:8 reminds us that power comes when the Spirit is poured out. Being filled with the Spirit enables believers to live with boldness, love, and zeal.
Practice Holy Zeal and Passion
Let your love for Christ be visible in your actions, words, and attitudes. Share your faith passionately, serve with enthusiasm, and pursue holiness with fervor. Remember that zeal for God is a mark of spiritual maturity.
Live with Purpose and Vision
Understand your divine calling. Whether it’s evangelism, discipleship, missions, or service, pursue your God-given purpose with passion. A life driven by divine purpose is a life on fire.
Surround Yourself with Fiery Believers
Community is vital. Fellowship with other passionate believers can ignite your spirit and keep your fire burning brightly. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages believers to stir up love and good works together.
Stay Obedient and Committed
Fire needs fuel. Stay committed to God’s Word, obedience, and spiritual disciplines. When you walk in obedience, God’s fire will burn brighter within you.
Be a Vessel of His Power
Step out in faith to pray for the sick, minister deliverance, or share the Gospel. Living in obedience to the Spirit’s leading will demonstrate His power through your life.
Overcoming Barriers to Living on Fire
Despite the divine calling, many believers face obstacles that threaten to extinguish their fiery passion. These include spiritual complacency, sin, distractions, discouragement, and burnout.
To overcome these, believers must:
Confess and forsake sin to keep their hearts pure (1 John 1:9).
Regularly refuel through prayer, worship, and fellowship.
Keep their eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of faith (Hebrews 12:2).
Persevere through trials, knowing that testing produces endurance (James 1:2-4).
Seek renewal through the Holy Spirit and spiritual mentorship.
The Reward of a Fiery Life
Living on fire for God is not merely about religious fervor; it is about fulfilling divine purpose. The reward is a life filled with His presence, power, and joy. It’s about experiencing the fullness of the Spirit, seeing lives transformed, and making an eternal impact.
The Scripture assures us in Revelation 3:15-16 that being lukewarm is unacceptable, but being fervent is what pleases God. When believers burn brightly, they become beacons of hope, carriers of His glory, and instruments of His healing and salvation.
The Christian life was never meant to be a dull, lukewarm existence. God’s heart yearns for His people to be on fire, passionate, fervent, and fully devoted to Him. This fire is the normal Christian life, a life characterized by Holy Spirit empowerment, divine purpose, and radiant glory.
To be “on fire for God” is to live with an eternal flame that consumes complacency and ignites others. It is to carry His glory and demonstrate His power daily. As believers, we are called not just to be saved but to be burning flames, lights shining in darkness, witnesses of His greatness, and carriers of His power.
