MONEY AND MINISTRY (2)

Money and ministry are two topics that may seem unrelated at first glance, but in reality, they are closely intertwined. As a minister, it is essential to understand the importance of money in ministry and how to handle it in a way that honors God.

The Bible has much to say about money and its role in our lives. In 1 Timothy 6:10, we are warned that “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” This verse reminds us that while money itself is not inherently evil, our attitude towards it can lead us astray. As ministers, we must be diligent to keep our hearts focused on God and not allow money to become an idol in our lives.

At the same time, money is a necessary tool for ministry. In Philippians 4:15-19, Paul praises the church in Philippi for their financial support of his ministry, saying “Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

This passage shows us that financial gifts to ministry can be a form of worship, pleasing to God and bearing fruit for His kingdom. It is important for ministers to recognize the value of these gifts and to handle them with integrity and transparency.

Ministers must also be wise stewards of the financial resources entrusted to them. In Luke 16:11, Jesus says “If you have not been faithful in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” This verse reminds us that our faithfulness in managing money is a test of our character and our commitment to God’s kingdom.

So, how can ministers ensure that they are handling money in a way that honors God? Here are a few practical steps:

  1. Develop a budget for your ministry and stick to it. This will help you prioritize your spending and ensure that you are using your resources in a way that aligns with your mission and values.
  2. Be transparent about your finances. Share regular financial reports with your board, and be open to answering any questions they may have.
  3. Seek wise counsel. Surround yourself with trusted advisors who can help you make sound financial decisions.
  4. Pray for wisdom. Ask God to guide you in your financial decisions and to help you use your resources for His glory.

In conclusion, money and ministry may seem like unlikely bedfellows, but they are closely intertwined. As ministers, it is essential that we handle money with integrity, transparency, and wisdom, recognizing its value as a tool for God’s kingdom. By doing so, we can ensure that our ministries are financially sustainable and that we are being faithful stewards of the resources entrusted to us. May we always keep our hearts focused on God and seek His will in all things, including our finances.
