MONEY AND MINISTRY (1)

Money and ministry are deeply intertwined. As a minister, it is essential to understand the importance of money in ministry and how to handle it in a way that is honoring to God.

In the Bible, we see many examples of the importance of money in ministry. For instance, in Philippians 4:15-19, Paul writes to the church in Philippi, thanking them for their financial support:

You Philippians know that in the early days of my gospel ministry, when I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need. Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account. I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

From this passage, we can see that financial support is not only important but also necessary for the advancement of the gospel. Paul acknowledges that the Philippians’ financial support has allowed him to continue his ministry and that their generosity will be rewarded by God.

In addition to providing financial support, money is also essential for the daily operations of a ministry. This includes paying staff, maintaining facilities, and funding outreach programs. Without proper financial management, a ministry cannot effectively carry out its mission.

However, it is crucial to remember that money should never be the primary focus of ministry. Instead, it should be viewed as a tool to help further the gospel. In Matthew 6:24, Jesus says:

No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

This verse reminds us that our ultimate loyalty should always be to God, not to money. While money is necessary for ministry, it should never become an idol or a source of temptation.

So, how can we as ministers handle money in a way that is honoring to God? Here are a few practical steps:

  1. Be transparent and accountable. It is essential to have clear financial policies and procedures in place and to regularly report financial activity to the appropriate parties. This helps build trust and ensures that money is being used for its intended purpose.
  2. Practice good stewardship. This means using money wisely and frugally, avoiding unnecessary expenses, and being mindful of the impact of financial decisions on the ministry and those it serves.
  3. Encourage generosity. Encourage your congregation to give regularly and generously to the ministry, reminding them of the blessings that come from giving and the impact their gifts can have.
  4. Pray for wisdom. Pray for wisdom in financial decision-making and trust that God will provide for the ministry’s needs.

In conclusion, money and ministry are closely related, and proper financial management is essential for the effective operation of a ministry. However, it is crucial to remember that money should never become the primary focus of ministry. Instead, we should view it as a tool to help further the gospel and practice good stewardship, transparency, and generosity in all financial matters. May we always keep our ultimate loyalty to God and trust in His provision.
