JEZEBEL IN THE CHURCH

“And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window.”
(2 Kings 9:30)

The church is meant to be a holy sanctuary, a place where believers gather to worship God in spirit and truth (John 4:24). However, in recent times, there has been a growing concern about inappropriate dressing, particularly among women in the choir and other leadership positions. Some come adorned in seductive, revealing clothing, Jezebelic makeup, and an overall appearance that resembles the world rather than the modesty befitting a woman of God. This behavior mirrors the spirit of Jezebel, a biblical figure synonymous with manipulation, seduction, and defiance against godly order.

The Bible warns against such conduct, emphasizing modesty, humility, and reverence in God’s house. This article explores the dangers of Jezebelic influence in the church, the biblical stance on modesty, and how the church should respond to preserve holiness.

  1. The Spirit of Jezebel in the Church

Jezebel was a notorious queen in the Bible who led Israel into idolatry and immorality. Her name has become synonymous with seduction, control, and rebellion against God’s authority. Revelation 2:20 (KJV) says:

“Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.”

The spirit of Jezebel operates through:
Seduction: Using appearance and charm to manipulate.
Control: Dominating spiritual spaces for selfish motives.
Rebellion: Defying godly authority and promoting sin.

When women (or men) in the choir dress provocatively, they introduce a Jezebelic influence that distracts from worship and invites lustful thoughts. This is not about legalism but about honoring God’s house and protecting the congregation from stumbling.

  1. The Biblical Standard for Modesty

The Bible clearly instructs women (and men) to dress modestly, especially in worship settings. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 (KJV) states:

“In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.”

Similarly, 1 Peter 3:3-4 (KJV) warns:

“Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”

These scriptures emphasize that a believer’s focus should be on inner beauty and godliness rather than drawing attention to the flesh.

What Constitutes “Jezebelic” Dressing in Church?
Revealing Outfits: Low-cut tops, short skirts/dresses, tight clothing that accentuates curves.
Makeup: Heavy, dramatic makeup that draws undue attention.
Worldly Fashion Trends: Dressing like a nightclub attendee rather than a worshipper.
Seductive Body Language: Flirtatious behavior, sensual dancing in the choir.

When such attitudes infiltrate the choir (or any ministry), it shifts focus from God to fleshly desires, opening doors to lust, temptation, and disorder.

  1. The Dangers of Jezebelic Influence in Worship

A. It Distracts from True Worship
Worship should center on God, not on the appearance of the worshippers. When choir members dress seductively, it distracts the congregation—especially men—leading to sinful thoughts (Matthew 5:28).

B. It Invites Demonic Influence
Jezebel was associated with witchcraft and idolatry (2 Kings 9:22). A seductive, rebellious attitude in church can open doors to demonic oppression, strife, and sexual sin.

C. It Corrupts the Church’s Witness
The world should see the church as set apart. When choir members look no different from secular entertainers, the church loses its distinction (Romans 12:2).

D. It Encourages Others to Stumble
1 Corinthians 8:9 (KJV) warns:
“But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to them that are weak.”

If a woman’s dressing causes a brother to lust, she shares in the sin (Matthew 18:6).

  1. The Church’s Response: Upholding Holiness

Church leaders must address this issue with wisdom and love, not condemnation.

A. Set Clear Dress Codes for Ministries
Choirs, ushers, and ministers should adhere to modest dress guidelines (e.g., no cleavage, short skirts, or tight clothing).

B. Teach on Biblical Modesty
Preach sermons on 1 Timothy 2:9-10, 1 Peter 3:3-4, and Proverbs 7:10 (which describes the “attire of a harlot”).

C. Correct in Love
If a sister is dressing inappropriately, female leaders should gently counsel her (Galatians 6:1).

D. Encourage Inner Beauty Over Outward Appearance
Celebrate women who exemplify godliness, humility, and wisdom (Proverbs 31:30).

The church must remain a holy place, free from the seductive influences of the world. Jezebelic dressing in the church is not just a fashion issue—it’s a spiritual one. By upholding biblical standards of modesty, the church protects its purity, honors God, and avoids becoming a stumbling block.

Let us remember 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (KJV):
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

May the women, and the entire church, dress and behave in a way that glorifies God, not the flesh.
