In many contemporary discussions within the church, a common misconception has emerged: that emphasizing God’s standards, particularly holiness and righteousness, is legalism. Critics sometimes argue that insisting on living according to God’s commandments is a legalistic attempt to earn God’s favor, or that it promotes human effort over grace.
This misunderstanding has led some believers and ministers to downplay the importance of holiness, or even to dismiss the call to live righteously as outdated and burdensome. However, such views are biblically unfounded and contrary to God’s revealed character and purposes.
God’s standards are eternal, unchanging, and perfectly pure. They are not a legalistic burden but a divine invitation to live in harmony with His nature. Living according to God’s standards demonstrates genuine faith, obedience, and reverence for Him. There is nothing outdated or obsolete about God’s commands; they are the foundation of our relationship with Him.
This article aims to establish that God’s standards are not legalism, that holiness is integral to biblical faith, and that living in obedience to God’s mapped-out standards is proof of our allegiance to Him.
God’s Standards Are Not Legalism
1. Defining Legalism Versus God’s Standards
Legalism is often misunderstood. Biblically, it involves attempting to earn salvation or righteousness through human effort or adding human traditions to God’s commandments (Galatians 5:4). Legalism is about self-righteousness and attempting to be justified by works rather than by faith.
In contrast, God’s standards are divine commandments rooted in His nature, commands given for our good, to guide us into righteousness, and to reflect His holiness. Obedience to God’s standards is an act of faith, love, and reverence, not a legalistic attempt to earn salvation.
Romans 3:31 “Do we then nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.”
Romans 7:12 “So then, the law is holy, and the commandments are holy, righteous and good.”
God’s commandments are holy and good; they reveal His character and His perfect will for His people.
2. The Law Is a Reflection of God’s Character
God’s moral standards are rooted in His holy and righteous nature. They are not arbitrary rules but reflect His perfect character.
Leviticus 19:2 “Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.”
Psalm 119:137 “Righteous are you, Lord, and your laws are right.”
Living by God’s standards is responding to His character, not a burdensome legal code.
3. The Law Is Not Obsolete
Some argue that the Old Testament law is outdated, but the Bible affirms that God’s moral standards are eternal.
Matthew 5:17-19 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
James 1:25 “But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it, not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it, that person will be blessed in what they do.”
God’s moral standards are timeless, unchangeable, and necessary for righteous living.
Holiness Is Not Legalism: A Biblical Mandate
4. Holiness Is Central to Christian Living
Holiness is not a legalistic burden but the standard of the believer’s life, rooted in God’s own holiness.
1 Peter 1:15-16 “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”
Preaching holiness is proclaiming God’s own character and calling believers to reflect it.
5. The Purpose of Holiness
Holiness is designed to set believers apart for God’s purposes, to enable intimacy with Him, and to be a witness to the world.
2 Corinthians 7:1 “Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.”
Romans 12:1-2 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, this is your true and proper worship.”
Holiness is a response to God’s mercy, not a legalistic rule.
6. Holiness Is a Mark of True Faith
Living in holiness is evidence of authentic salvation and a genuine relationship with God.
James 2:26 “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.”
1 John 3:9 “No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them.”
Holiness is the fruit of true faith, not legalism.
Living by God’s Standards Is Evidence of Our Relationship with Him
7. Obedience Demonstrates Love
Jesus emphasized that obedience to God’s commandments is an expression of love for Him.
John 14:15 “If you love me, keep my commands.”
1 John 5:3 “In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome.”
Obedience is not legalism but a love response.
8. God’s Standards Are a Sign of Discipleship
Living according to God’s standards demonstrates true discipleship.
John 8:31-32 “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples… Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Matthew 7:20 “By their fruit you will recognize them.”
Obedience to God’s standards is evidence of genuine discipleship.
9. It Is a Witness to the World
Living a holy life is a testimony to the world of God’s transformative power.
Matthew 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Our lifestyle reflects our allegiance to God’s standards.
The Misconception That God’s Standards Are Outdated
10. God’s Word Is Everlasting
Some claim that certain standards are outdated, but the Bible affirms the eternal nature of God’s law.
Biblical Reference:
Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”
Matthew 24:35 “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”
God’s standards are timeless and unchanging.
11. The Spirit Continues to Affirm God’s Moral Standards
The Holy Spirit continues to convict and affirm God’s standards in believers’ hearts.
John 16:13 “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”
Romans 8:14 “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.”
Living according to God’s standards is being led by the Spirit.
The Benefits of Living According to God’s Standards
12. Spiritual Growth and Maturity
Obedience to God’s standards leads to spiritual maturity and closer relationship with Him.
Ephesians 4:13 “Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
13. Divine Blessings and Favor
Obeying God’s standards brings blessings and divine favor.
Deuteronomy 28:1-2 “If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.”
14. Witnessing Effectively to Others
A life lived in obedience to God’s standards is an effective testimony.
Titus 2:7-8 “In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned.”
Addressing the Misconception: God’s Standards Are Not Legalism
15. God’s Standards Are Based on His Nature, Not Human Effort
Legalism is a man-made attempt to earn God’s favor, but God’s standards are rooted in His divine character and love.
Ezekiel 36:26 — “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.”
