FAITHFULNESS IN MARRIAGE

Marriage is a sacred institution established by God, and faithfulness is a crucial component of a successful and godly marriage. The Bible has much to say about faithfulness in marriage and the importance it holds in the eyes of God.

Importance of Faithfulness in Marriage:

The Bible is clear about the importance of faithfulness in marriage. Proverbs 5:15-20 says, Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. Should your springs be scattered abroad, streams of water in the streets? Let them be for yourself alone, and not for sharing with strangers. Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love. Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman and embrace the bosom of an adulteress? (ESV) This passage encourages husbands to be fully satisfied with their own wives and to avoid the temptation of unfaithfulness.

Similarly, 1 Corinthians 7:2-5 says, Because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. (ESV) This passage emphasizes the importance of sexual faithfulness within marriage and the need for both spouses to satisfy each other’s needs.

Characteristics of Faithfulness in Marriage:

  1. Loyalty: Faithfulness in marriage requires loyalty to one’s spouse. Proverbs 18:22 says, He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord. (ESV) When a person is loyal to their spouse, they are demonstrating their commitment to them and to the marriage.
  2. Honesty: Honesty is a key characteristic of faithfulness in marriage. Proverbs 12:22 says, The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy. (NIV) When spouses are honest with each other, they build trust and deepen their relationship.
  3. Respect: Respect is an important component of faithfulness in marriage. Ephesians 5:33 says, However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. (NIV) When spouses respect each other, they are valuing and honoring one another, which is a crucial aspect of faithfulness.
  4. Communication: Communication is key in any relationship, and it is especially important in a marriage. James 1:19 says, My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. (NIV) When spouses communicate openly and honestly with each other, they can build a stronger and more faithful relationship.

Faithfulness in marriage is a crucial component of a godly and successful marriage. The Bible emphasizes the importance of faithfulness and provides key characteristics that spouses can strive for in their marriage. By being loyal, honest, respectful, and communicative, spouses can build a strong and faithful marriage that honors God and brings them joy and fulfillment.
