In a world that constantly beckons us to focus on temporary pleasures, material possessions, and worldly success, the Christian life calls us to a higher, eternal perspective. An eternity-driven life recognizes that this world is not our home; instead, we are on a divine journey toward our everlasting destination with God. This understanding fundamentally reshapes how we live, love, serve, and hope.
Our True Homeland Is in Heaven:
The Bible explicitly states that believers are not ultimately citizens of this world but are citizens of heaven. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Philippians, captures this truth beautifully:
“Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” Philippians 3:20
This verse reminds us that our true identity and future are rooted in the heavenly kingdom, not in earthly kingdoms or possessions. Our current life is a temporary sojourn, a pilgrimage, until we reach our eternal home.
The Nature of Our Heavenly Citizenship:
Heaven is described as a place of unending joy, peace, and the presence of God. Revelation 21:3-4 paints a vivid picture:
“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’”
This future reality is the hope that sustains believers amid life’s trials and temptations.
This World Is Temporary: The Transience of Earthly Life
One of the fundamental truths of an eternity-driven life is the recognition that this world is temporary. The Apostle Peter echoes this in his first letter:
“Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” 1 Peter 2:11-12
The language of being “foreigners” and “exiles” underscores that believers are passing through this world, not settling here permanently.
The Ephemeral Nature of Material Wealth
Jesus taught that earthly riches are fleeting:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Matthew 6:19-20
Earthly possessions are temporary and fragile; our true treasures are laid up in heaven, secure and eternal.
We Are on a Journey: Life as a Pilgrimage
The concept of life as a journey or pilgrimage is central to biblical teaching. The Apostle Paul likened the Christian life to a race, emphasizing perseverance and focus:
“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:14
This journey involves moving forward, growing in faith, and preparing for eternity. It’s not a passive existence but an active pursuit of the divine purpose.
The Wilderness and the Promise Land
The Israelites’ journey to the Promised Land serves as a powerful metaphor for our spiritual journey. They wandered in the desert for 40 years, enduring hardships but moving toward God’s promise. Deuteronomy 8:2 reflects on this:
“Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart.”
Similarly, our earthly journey involves testing, refining, and growing in faith, all while looking toward our ultimate destination in heaven.
The Role of Faith During the Journey
Hebrews 11:13-16 describes believers as strangers and pilgrims on earth, longing for a heavenly homeland:
“All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance… They were longing for a better country, a heavenly one.”
Their faith motivated them to endure hardships because they knew their true home was in eternity.
Living with an Eternal Perspective
Living as an eternity-driven person means aligning every aspect of life with the reality that we are travelers passing through this world. It involves shifting priorities from temporary pursuits to everlasting values.
1. Prioritizing God’s Kingdom
Matthew 6:33 exhorts believers:
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Our primary focus should be on advancing God’s kingdom through evangelism, service, and personal holiness, knowing that these pursuits have eternal significance.
2. Living with Urgency
Knowing that life is fleeting compels us to act with urgency. James 4:14 reminds us:
“You do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”
Our time is limited, and eternity is forever, thus, we must seize every opportunity to serve God and others.
3. Investing in Eternal Treasures
Rather than accumulating material possessions, believers are called to invest in spiritual treasures:
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21
Acts of kindness, sharing the Gospel, mentoring others, and building God’s kingdom are eternal investments.
4. Enduring Trials with Hope
Life’s hardships are temporary, but our hope in Christ is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 encourages us:
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”
This perspective gives us strength to persevere.
The Power of Hope and Promise
Hope in eternity sustains believers through suffering and uncertainty. Revelation 21:7 affirms:
“Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.”
The promise of eternal inheritance motivates us to remain faithful, knowing that our reward is secure.
The Promise of Resurrection
The resurrection of Jesus guarantees our future resurrection and eternal life. 1 Corinthians 15:20-22 declares:
“But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep… For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.”
Our journey doesn’t end in death but continues into eternal life.
Our Mission: Living as Ambassadors of Heaven
As pilgrims on earth, our lives should reflect our heavenly citizenship. We are called to be ambassadors for Christ, sharing the message of hope and eternal life.
“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21
Our purpose is to bring others into the hope of eternal life through the Gospel, living out the love and truth of Christ.
Evangelism and Discipleship:
Matthew 28:19-20 commands:
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
This commission underscores our role in guiding others on their journey toward eternity.
Living Today With Eternity in Mind
Living with an eternal perspective influences our daily decisions:
Prioritize spiritual growth and character development.
Invest in meaningful relationships and service.
Practice gratitude and worship, recognizing God’s eternal sovereignty.
Maintain hope amid suffering, trusting in God’s promises.
Share the Gospel actively, knowing that salvation is eternal life.
Cultivating Eternal Values
Galatians 5:22-23 describes the fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, qualities that reflect the eternal nature of God’s kingdom.
The Christian life is fundamentally a journey toward eternity, a glorious, everlasting fellowship with God. This world, with all its beauty and struggles, is but a fleeting shadow compared to the eternal realities awaiting us.
Revelation 22:12-13 captures this hope:
“Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”
Living as an eternity-driven person means embracing this divine journey, fixing our eyes on Jesus, and investing our lives in what truly lasts forever.
Remember that this world is not our home. We are on a divine pilgrimage, passing through temporary dwellings toward our eternal inheritance. Our lives should be marked by purpose, hope, and unwavering focus on the eternal kingdom of God, where we will dwell with Him forever in perfect joy
