The altar is a sacred place, the meeting point of heaven and earth, where divine power is released, and lives are transformed. It is the place of worship, sacrifice, and divine encounters. But behind every altar, there lies a critical truth: what is behind the altar determines what is in front of it.
The Bible warns us that there must be no mixture, no compromise, no double standards, no contamination, because the altar is a holy place. When darkness lurks behind the altar, when impurity and mixture invade the sacred, the result is spiritual corruption, broken fellowship, and divine judgment.
Today, I declare that darkness behind the altar must be exposed and eradicated. The church, ministers, and every believer must examine their hearts and lives to ensure purity, integrity, and holiness. There must be no mixture, only pure worship and unwavering devotion to God.
1. The Biblical Foundation: Darkness Behind the Altar
The Altar Is a Place of Divine Encounter
Exodus 29:43-45 states, “And there I will meet with the children of Israel, and the place shall be sanctified by my glory… and I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God.” The altar is a holy place where God’s presence dwells.
The Danger of Mixture
2 Kings 17:33 warns, “So they feared the LORD, and served their own gods… and so they did unto this day.” Mixture, serving God and idols, pollutes the altar, corrupts the worship, and invites divine judgment.
The Example of Eli and His Sons
1 Samuel 2:12-17 exposes the darkness behind Eli’s altar, his sons were corrupt, and their impurity defiled the house of God. The altar’s purity was compromised, leading to divine rebuke and judgment.
Ananias and Sapphira: Darkness in the House
Acts 5:1-11 recounts how Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Spirit, hidden darkness behind the altar led to their sudden death. The altar demands sincerity; hypocrisy invites judgment.
2. The Reality of Darkness Behind the Altar Today
Mixture in Worship
Many worship with lips but their hearts are far from God (Matthew 15:8). Compromise, worldliness, and hypocrisy pollute genuine worship.
The Spirit of Compromise
2 Timothy 3:13 warns that evil men and seducers will wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. The enemy seeks to introduce darkness into the altar through compromise and impurity.
The Danger of Hidden Sin
Psalm 66:18 says, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.” Darkness behind the altar often begins with hidden sin.
The Spirit of Lukewarmness
Revelation 3:15-16 condemns the church at Laodicea for being lukewarm, neither cold nor hot, polluted by mixture. Divine rejection follows complacency and compromise.
3. The Call for Purity and Holiness
The Necessity of Holiness
Leviticus 10:1-2 recounts how Nadab and Abihu offered strange fire before the Lord and were consumed by fire from heaven. Holy service requires purity.
The Cleanliness of the Heart
Matthew 5:8 states, “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” True worship begins with inner purity.
The Need for Separation
2 Corinthians 6:17-18 urges believers to come out from among them and be separate, touching not the unclean. Separation from worldly influences preserves the sanctity of the altar.
The Power of Consecration
Romans 12:1-2 calls us to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God. Consecration keeps the altar pure and the service holy.
4. The Consequences of Darkness Behind the Altar
Divine Rejection
Revelation 3:16 warns, “Because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” Darkness and mixture lead to divine rejection.
Spiritual Stagnation and Barrenness
Hosea 10:1 states, “Israel is an empty vine.” Mixture causes spiritual barrenness and prevents the flow of divine life.
Loss of Power and Authority
James 4:3-4 warns that being double-minded and worldly-minded causes us to lose spiritual authority.
Divine Judgment
Malachi 2:1-3 speaks of God’s anger towards priests and leaders who polluted His altar, divine judgment follows impurity and compromise.
5. How to Ensure There Is No Darkness Behind the Altar
Personal Holiness and Heart Purity
2 Timothy 2:21 encourages us to cleanse ourselves from dishonor, making ourselves vessels unto honor.
Genuine Repentance and Confession
1 John 1:9 promises, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Regular repentance restores purity.
Guard Your Heart
Proverbs 4:23 advises, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Guard against bitterness, lust, pride, and worldly influences.
Live a Life of Integrity
Titus 2:7 urges, “In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works.” Integrity preserves the sanctity of the altar.
Seek the Holy Spirit’s Fire
Luke 3:16 states, “He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire.” Fire purifies, consumes impurity, and keeps the altar burning with divine fire.
6. The Power of Clean Worship and Divine Presence
Worship in Spirit and Truth
John 4:24 affirms, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” Authentic worship keeps darkness out.
The Anointing and Holy Fire
1 Kings 18:38 recounts how Elijah’s sacrifice was consumed by divine fire, signifying divine approval. The altar must be lit with divine fire, pure, holy, and unpolluted.
6.3 The Role of Prayer and Fasting
Matthew 17:21 emphasizes that some altars require prayer and fasting to remove darkness and open divine channels.
Maintaining a Spirit of Humility and Reverence
Isaiah 66:2 reminds us, “For all those things hath mine hand made, and those things have been, saith the LORD.” Reverence and humility keep the altar holy.
Brothers and sisters, the altar is a sacred place, hallowed by God’s presence. Darkness behind the altar, mixture, hypocrisy, impurity, defiles the sacred space and invites divine judgment.
The Lord is calling us to purity, holiness, and unwavering devotion. We must examine our hearts, eradicate every form of darkness, and burn with divine fire. Only then will the altar be a place of true worship, divine power, and divine blessing.
Revelation 3:15-16 warns us: “Because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” Darkness and mixture will cause divine rejection.
But when the altar is pure, when there is no darkness behind it, God’s glory will fill the place, and divine power will flow freely. The fire of heaven will consume the sacrifice, and lives will be transformed.
Let us be vigilant. Let us guard the altar of our hearts, our ministries, and our worship. There must be no mixture, no compromise, no hypocrisy, no contamination. Only purity, holiness, and sincere devotion will invite God’s presence and power.
Remember, darkness behind the altar corrupts the fire, but purity invites divine fire. Choose today to walk in righteousness, to live in holiness, and to keep the altar sacred. When the altar is pure, God’s glory will shine, and His power will be limitless.
Revelation 22:11 exhorts, “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still; and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still.” But for those who pursue holiness, divine fire, divine power, and divine blessing are yours.
Let the altar be pure, and let God’s glory fill the earth!
Yours In His Service
